It’s spring! And if you’re like me, spring cleaning is the last thing on your mind. I’ve got so much other stuff going on (like blogging for you fine people!) that I don’t have time to do major organizing/cleaning/home improvement projects right now. I often find myself wishing I had time to keep everything spotless around the house. I think a lot of this comes from guilt over staying home – feeling like I should be doing it all: cooking, cleaning, educating, and generally being a good wife and mother. There are a couple problems with all of that. First, it’s not realistic to be June Cleaver in this day and age. Second, it’s very difficult to do that stuff while still working, even if I AM working from home.
So, I’m sharing four things I do to keep my sanity and not feel guilty.
- Whenever I dry my hands and have a damp paper towel, before I throw it away I use it to dust something. Sometimes it’s the entertainment center, or the baseboards, or the little nooks and crannies of the bedroom doors. It helps keep things relatively clean.
- Pick something up when I leave the room. If I’m going to the bedroom, is there anything in the room I’m leaving that belongs there? It takes two seconds to look around and find one thing.
- I’ve started doing one load of laundry almost every other day (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays). That usually equals a full washer for the three of us. I save whites for Sundays so they don’t get dingy in the wash with the colors, so I do two loads that day.
- 5 minute pickup. When I was a kid, my mom taught me this trick. Set a timer for 5 minutes and get started straightening up a room. If you’re done before the timer goes off, start somewhere else. If you’re not done, oh well! You get to stop when it beeps. This keeps me from feeling overwhelmed by a mess and lets me still get some cleaning done even when I want to be doing other things.
The most important thing, though, is to ask for help and give myself grace. Jon is so good about helping even when I don’t ask and it’s not the end of the world if the house is messy, it will get cleaned up eventually!
